Pencher Sur Ses Vacances

Translated as 'taking a trip down memory lane' this project explored the themes of memory and place. This resulted in an accumulation of material that represents places of personal significance involving map work, memory drawings and projection.

This project allowed me to work with a plethora of different mediums in an aim to showcase a multitude of memories, memorabilia and stories. More than anything, I found this exploration incredibly thought provoking and was grateful to find a way to collect and reimagine identities of places, each with their own connection between family members.

I had been through a number of maps, some newer than others having replaced lost ones, to build up a log of places with the greatest significance to my family and I. These were then shaped into a mark shift ‘memory island’ pictured above. I then projected images taken from my grandparents and parents of these places.

The images below show a variety of drawings of which the majority have been done through the support of memory with a forced, limited use of photographs. I found this exercise quite fun! If I couldn’t quite remember a scene from my head then I wouldn't draw it and so I ended up with half finished sketches with the most poignant buildings or landscapes being depicted more clearly, much like my memory of that place.
