Brutalist Monument
This project followed a mock brief, to create a portfolio of images for an architecture magazine with the title article being ‘Brutalist Monument’. This allowed for a more planned set of photos with the ideas of where text might fit, double page spreads and so on.
I decided to take these photos during the early morning with the low sun. This allowed for greater shadows, higher contrast and the occasional orange glow. I felt it was important to demonstrate the sharp corners of the brutalist architecture and the dark shadows would be more effective against the grey/white concrete. I chose areas of sky for places where text could go as well as plainer sections of concrete.
These images are all from the Roger Stevens building, on campus at the University of Leeds. I wanted to make sure that I had a few photos from the inside of the building to allow the reader to understand the use. The ascending, narrow doors of one lecture theatre does this, as well as creating a great contrast of colour with the blue and orange amongst the horizontal and vertical shadows.
These inside shots focus more on the concrete and hard materials more than the exterior structure further signifying the brutalism theme.
